"Jumping Mouse" bug in Windows 2000/XP

This is a Microsoft problem, documented on the MS support website, Knowledge Base Article 131976. Whilst the instructions below should clear up the problem, PC Maritime can take no responsibility for any ongoing problems which are in the control of Microsoft.
The mouse thinks it is a serial ballpoint device and this needs to be disabled. You can avoid this happening by starting Navmaster first, then the GPS. Or you can eliminate the jumping mouse effect by disabling the "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" functionality in the Operating System. First you need to identify which device is causing the jumping mouse, normally GPS.

  • Wait until the jumping mouse effect appears
  • Disconnect the device causing this effect from the computer's COM port
  • Open the computer's "Control Panel"
  • Use System\Hardware\Device Manager\Mice and other pointing devices path to obtain access to "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" device
  • Use "Disable" via right mouse button menu to disable use of this device
  • Exit from all menus, disconnect power from the computer
  • Connect the disconnected navigational sensors, turn on the computer power supply
  • Check there is no "jumping mouse" effect and data is supplied correctly.

For Advanced XP Users - Disabling serial mouse in your registry

Unplug your GPS from the PC and disable serial mouse devices as follows:
Right click My Computer
Select Properties
Select Advanced Tab
Select Settings in Startup and Recovery
Select Edit
Add /NoSerialMouse (this is case sensitive so add it exactly as shown here) to the line that looks like:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\XP="Windows XP" /fastdetect
so that it now reads:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\XP="Windows XP" /fastdetect/NoSerialMouse
File -> Exit Save yes
OK
Reboot and re-attach your GPS
