Installation Trouble Shooting

Q. After installing Navmaster v5, it seems to take longer to log in.

A. We have made available a USB dongle as an alternative to a parallel port dongle. In version 5, Navmaster looks for both dongle types, which means log in is slower. To speed the log in time you need to to follow the instructions below. However, this is only necessary if you have a Rainbow ( Beige coloured) dongle.

  1. Right mouse click on the Navmaster Icon on your Desktop
  2. Select Properties
  3. In the target line, type dongletype:nsc, after "C:\ Program Files\Navmaster\Navmaster.exe"
  4. Ensure there is a space after the speech marks
  5. The target line should now read "C:\Program Files\Navmaster\Navmaster.exe" dongletype:nsc

Q. I have an interchangeable floppy and CD drive.  How do I go about loading my charts onto my laptop?

A. Please follow this procedure (also in the User Guide Chapter One.)

  1. Start your computer with the floppy drive resident.
  2. Insert the ARCS licence disk into the floppy drive.
  3. Runs Windows Explorer and create a new folder e.g. C:\ARCS Permit. (To create a new folder: - Highlight the C drive, go to File\New\Folder, name the folder).
  4. Copy the permit files (2) from A:\ to C:\ARCS Permit (Hold down the left mouse button on the selected files and drag the selected files from A:\ to C:\ ARCS Permit).
  5. Restart your computer with the CD drive resident.
  6. Follow the steps outlined below or in the User Guide Chapter One for installing charts.

    a.  Start Navmaster.

    b.   Choose the ARCS or Seafarer tab depending on the licence you are installing.

  7. c.   Click the Permits button.

  8. Your computer warns you that the A:\ drive is not accessible, press Cancel on this message.
  9. Select the drive and folder location of the permit file and click on permit file name.  Then follow the instructions in the User Guide.

    a.   Insert the update CD into your CD-Rom drive when prompted

    b.  Enter your PIN number when requested.  The permits will be installed.

    c.  Once the update CD has been read choose Express to install all charts and updates to the hard disk or if you do not have sufficient space, select custom to select the charts you wish to install to hard disk.  If you do not install charts or updates onto your hard drive you can still load them.  Navmaster will prompt you to put the appropriate CD into the CD drive if it is not already present.

Q. I have just installed Navmaster v5 from an earlier version, but cannot see my ARCS charts.

A. To speed up chart handling, we have added a Build function to re-index charts. Once you have installed Navmaster v5, select Chart\Management| ARCS, click on the Build button at the bottom of the window. Once this has taken place, you will be able to access your charts.

Q. I get a message in blue at the bottom of my screen giving me the following message " screen size not set". What does this mean?

A. In version 5, to ensure that symbols such as vessel outline, are drawn at the correct size for your monitor, you must enter your screen size and save it within workspace. Select Tools\ Options\System and enter screen measurements in millimeters. Save these measurements to your workspace, File\Workspace\Save.

Q. I have recently changed my laptop and have reinstalled my charts onto my new laptop.  However, I can now only view a selection of my licensed charts.

A. This is probably due to re-installing your charts incorrectly.  If you have bought and updated your charts at different times, please follow carefully the chart installation process as outlined below and in the User Guide (Chapter One).  To avoid having to go through this process in the future, we recommend you keep all your charts updated to the same Update week number.

  1. Delete all charts.
  2. Select Charts\Management\ ARCS tab
  3. Click on the delete button in this window. Please confirm twice that you wish to complete this process. Once you have deleted your charts, it will state that the operation is complete. If you have not deleted your charts successfully, you will not receive that message.
  4. Insert your latest licence disk into the floppy disk drive.
  5. Click the permits button and then the disk button.
  6. Select the GB.SCP (ARCS Skipper chart permits) file.
  7. To the question “ Are the charts that you are installing at this time all updated to the same Update CD?” Answer No.

Note:   Remember that you will need ALL your Chart and Update CDs unless you have updated all your charts to one Update CD. In this case you will only need this Update CD and the relevant area CDs (RC1 etc.) so answer yes to the above question.

  1. When you are asked to insert an Update CD insert, the earliest Update CD you were supplied with.
  2. To the question, “ Do you have another Update CD to process?”  Answer yes until you have worked through all the Update CDs that you possess in chronological order (earliest to latest).  Once you have completed this process you will be given the opportunity to install all the charts and updates onto your hard disc via Express installation.  Alternatively, you can choose (by not selecting Express) which charts and/or updates are to be copied to hard disk by choosing Management\ ARCS\ Custom from the Charts menu.

Q. I cannot install my Proudman tidal area(s) from my original floppy disc(s)?

A. The original floppy discs are unlikely to work with Windows 95/98. Please phone PC Maritime giving details of your Tidal discs and we will provide you with instructions for installation.

Q. Why do I get a runtime error when trying to install Navmaster from the CD?

A. This is usually caused by using the 2nd drive of a dual CD drive computer. Make sure you insert the CD into the 1st drive (lower drive letter).
