Weatherfax 2000, from New Zealand weather specialists Xaxero, is a software package which connects your PC to a shortwave radio via a supplied cable. You tune your radio to a transmitting station, press GO and the signal is translated into an image on your screen. The cable can connect to the PC's serial port or to the PC's USB port.

A built-in database, searchable by region, provides full information on transmitting stations and their daily schedules. You can receive a very wide range of weather information, such as current and forecast weather maps, pressure charts, wind charts, ocean currents, iceberg reports, wave and swell heights, temperature and rainfall reports, and more. Once received, you can zoom into the image, display several faxes in separate windows, use advanced image-processing tools to improve the image and print out images. Weatherfax 2000 can also receive Navtex navigation warnings.

The information is free, the coverage is worldwide and the transmissions are round-the-clock.
