Hanseatic Marine Training School buys Virtual Engine Room software

Hanseatic Marine Training School has made its first investment in engine room simulation with the purchase of PC Maritime's Virtual Engine Room software.
The initial purchase is for one workstation, with the aim of extending this to a network of five workstations in a specially designated area within an existing engine workshop.
"Simulators are a necessary part of training," said Captain Fraser Betts, Principal of HMTS. "Simulation is particularly relevant to engineer training, where it is impractical and costly to invest in running machinery. We already have static engine room equipment so that students acquire a hands-on feel for the physical dimensions; with the Virtual Engine Room software we will be able to put students through a full range of accurately modelled operational scenarios."
Virtual Engine Room, Type Approved to STCW 95 and now in version 3, is a full mission engine room training package for PCs. It provides training in every aspect of a typical ship's engine room, and gives feedback to both students and instructors by means of standardised assessment tests. A sophisticated fault simulator enables instructors to inject over 50 different faults into training scenarios. Virtual Engine Room is used by training colleges in some 20 countries worldwide.
HMTS's core business is to provide pre-sea vocational training for ratings, with supplementary courses in both deck and engine for junior and senior officers. The investment in Virtual Engine Room coincides with a recent increase in officer training. HMTS trains some 330 students a year, of which about 115 are engineers.
